Preparing for Your Cake Smash

Updated: Dec 29, 2022

Your little one is turning ONE! It happens fast, doesn't it?

These days, a popular option for capturing your baby at the fun, exciting age of one is doing a cake smash session. These sessions are fun, fully customized, adorable, messy, and sweet. Your first job when considering a cake smash session is to check out my Cake Smash tab and take a peek at the different package options I offer. There are three custom sessions for you to choose from, based on your needs and how involved you want to be in planning for your session.

WHAT to KNOW:

1. All Cake Smash sessions are done in studio (Foxboro, MA) where I will set up everything for you. All set up and clean up are taken care of by me so that you can just sit back and enjoy the session.

2. A quick (sink) bath time is offered no matter what. There's no way I'm letting you put a sticky, frosting-covered baby in his/her car seat for the ride home! (My OCD wouldn't allow it)

HOWEVER... you do have options for bath time. You can simply put your little one in our sink and lather them up and go, OR you can add on "bubbly tubby time" photos (see Cake Smash page). This includes a vintage style tub basin, a backdrop, bubbles, and adorable (yet discrete) photos of your little one enjoying a bath. It's a cute way to capture the smiles a fun bubble bath bring! If you do choose this option, I will need to know ahead of time (to have a separate backdrop set up for you).

3. What you bring to your session (to customize your photos) is completely up to you. Upon consultation (via phone call, email, etc.) I will ask you what you have in mind in terms of theme, color, etc. Your cake smash can be as elaborate or as simple as you'd like. Different packages are available if you are the type that wants me to take care of the "creative side" of the photos, or if you are crafty and want to bring it all yourself!

4. Less is always more. When you are thinking about decorations and themes, take a look at Pinterest and get a feel of colors, decor, etc. that fit your style. Remember though, that the focal point of your photos should always be the baby and the cake.

5. Sit back and relax. Cake smashes don't ALWAYS go as planned. I always encourage parents to sit back and "enjoy the show," and try not to stress so much when baby is NOT interested in the cake or the session. No matter what, we're going to get some adorable photos - even if baby is repulsed by the idea of indulging in that sugar. ;)

6. Lots of people ask: when is the best time to schedule my child's cake smash? This completely depends on your comfort level as well as what you plan to do with the photos. Of course the closer to their actual birthday the better. But, if you'd like to use the photos for decoration at his/her first birthday party, we'll want to schedule the session a couple of weeks before. My turn around time for photos is typically within 7 days. You'll receive the digital files from your child's session and you can print them wherever/however you please. These photos also make for great "thank you" cards!

7. Finally, remember that these "smashes" aren't specific to just CAKE. We've done spaghetti, donuts, cupcakes...you name it! The point is just to have fun and make a mess.

No matter what you decide, cake smashes are a blast! Email me to schedule your smash. I suggest emailing a couple of months BEFORE your child's first birthday so we can schedule the smash accordingly.
